China Town Hall: The Tech Economy

Tech Experts, China Business Studies Initiative (CBSI) members, students, and people interested in technology gathered virtually to share their thoughts and get a deep understanding of the US and China's tech economy.

On November 17, 2020, the China Business Studies Initiative (CBSI) at the University of San Francisco with the Bay Area Council hosted a two-part China Town Hall webinar: China Town Hall: The Tech Economy.

The panel was held in conjunction with the CHINA Town Hall, organized by the National Committee on US-China Relations. It followed and built on a panel held at 4:00 PST on Trade and Economic relations featuring Amy Celico (Albright Stonebridge Group), Huang Yiping (Peking University), and Andy Rothman (Matthews Asia).

The event opened with the welcome remarks from the School of Management's dean, Charles T. Moses. He began by giving his warmest welcome to the audience and highlighting the primary purpose and the context of the webinar. During the webinar, our moderator was Peter Lorentzen, the board member of the China Business Studies Initiative (CBSI) and Academic Director of MS in Applied Economics. The webinar Panelists were tech investor and podcaster Rui Ma, Sean Randolph of the Bay Area Council Economic Institute., and internet executive and Alibaba alumnus Brian A. Wong.

Panelists discussed how the incoming Biden-Harris administration would impact US-China relations. They covered opportunities for cooperation between the US and China in areas such as green tech and fight with the pandemic, also current state and future of conflict points such as IP protection and security. They also discussed areas for cooperation and competition between the US and China tech companies and investors. The discussion also covered specific companies like Huawei, Tiktok, and Ant Group. They answered the various exciting questions from the audience. The webinar attendees joined from different parts of the world, including Brazil, Chile, China, India, Turkey, the US, and many more.

The panel ended with the Director of CBSI, Prof. Xiaohua Yang's speech, who gave special thanks to the student team, sponsors, coordinator, and moderator Prof. Peter Lorentzen.
